ALBAWABA - The US aircraft carrier Gerald Ford departs from the port of the Greek island of Crete to Haifa, Israel.

President Donald Trump sent USS Gerald Ford, the world's largest aircraft carrier, to the Middle East amid tension with Iran and a possible U.S. attack on Tehran.

Washington has built up its biggest military presence in the region in decades as it pressures Iran to halt the development of its nuclear programme.

USS Gerald Ford arrived in the Greek Island of Crete for refuelling, and today it left the docks towards Israel's Haifa, accompanied by destroyer USS Mahan.

Trump has repeatedly threatened Tehran with military action if it does not cut a new deal on its nuclear programme or end its brutal crackdown on protesters, after the killing of over 7,000 people in January.
