Al-Marashi said: “Water scarcity will be faced in the world if we don’t take this issue seriously. The responsibility must be shared by the private as well as public sectors and individuals”.

The WETEX Conference, newly introduced at WETEX 2009, was an overwhelming success with important topics being discussed during the 2-day conference, leading to better awareness and understanding for the utilities business, energy, water, and environment sustainability.

The seminar revealed that the world’s power consumption would double by 2050 and will therefore add more strain on the utilities worldwide, particularly in the Middle East region.

Al Tayer added: “Saving precious energy and water resources and protecting the environment should not be mere wishful thinking. It should be the duty of everyone, policy-makers, service providers as well as end-users.”

Al Tayer added: “The utilities sector in the Middle East is a very dynamic market as the region continues on a considerable growth track. A booming infrastructure market necessitates new solutions for the ever growing demand for energy and water across the region.”

“WETEX Conference brought together industry experts, solution providers, governments and regulatory bodies to network, discuss, and analyze how the region can best continue on this growth path in light of the challenges,” added Al Tayer.

In the area of energy consumption, the recent volatility in oil and gas prices have prompted many power producers to think up new methods of meeting energy demand over the next 5 to 20 years. Prior to the economic downturn, global energy growth rates were averaging 4 per cent, according to discussions at the seminar.

DEWA held a gala dinner on the second day of WETEX at the Bustan Rotana, attended by Mr. Al Tayer. Al Tayer and Mr. Abdullah Al Hajri, acting VP for customer servicing, felicitated sponsors and cosponsors of the show. Also, Mr Al Tayer honoured government organizations that participated in the show.
