Three would-be assassins are still at large in a "neighboring country" four years after an attack on President Saddam Hussein's eldest son, Uday, an Iraqi newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Al-Rafidain, quoting security sources, named the suspects as Tahsin Majid, Muayed Radhi and Salman Sharif, but it did not specify in which country they had taken refuge since the December 12, 1996 attack in Baghdad.

Uday, who was riddled with bullets, has pointed a finger of blame at Iran, a charge denied by Tehran despite claims of responsibility from pro-Iranian opposition groups.

In August 1998, Iraqi authorities announced the arrest of two Iraqis for the attack, saying three accomplices were on the run.

Uday, now 36, still carries a limp from the assassination bid. He underwent a series of operations and spent several months in hospital before recovering use of his legs -- BAGHDAD (AFP)
