Xerox Corporation is the industry’s leader in the number of pages produced on digital production color presses, with its flagship Xerox iGen3® Digital Production Press and DocuColor® Digital Presses producing more than 13 billion 8.5” x 11” (A4) equivalent impressions in 2006.
According to estimates by InfoTrends, a leading independent research firm, Xerox's installed base of DocuColor and iGen3 presses accounts for approximately 50 percent of the total worldwide page volume printed by high-speed production color printers.
“This puts Xerox well ahead of other competitors in this space,” said Jim Hamilton, InfoTrends’ director of On Demand Printing and Publishing Consulting Services.
Hamilton noted that page share is determined using an independent, industry-standard definition of impressions. “To make sure we’re comparing apples to apples and examining production volumes in the most objective, independent way, we use A4 equivalent impressions, regardless of number of colors on the page.”
InfoTrends includes all color printers with a speed greater than 41 pages per minute – including cut-sheet and continuous feed devices – as well as toner and ink-jet based products. Following this guideline, Xerox digital production color presses produce the highest volume of pages in the industry.
“One of the major digital press companies counts each of the four primary colors printed on a page as an impression, so you have to divide their published volumes by at least four and sometimes up to seven to get the actual number of pages produced,” said Andy Tribute, one of the industry’s leading authorities and managing partner of Attributes Associates, an international consulting company specializing in the printing, publishing and media markets. “The way they quote their numbers is intentionally different from all other vendors, and it exaggerates the real number of impressions they
make. Unless you understand this, it gives a very warped impression of the market’s dynamics. If Xerox were to use the same approach, their figures for 2006 would be 52 billion impressions.”
On a worldwide average, each Xerox iGen3 press produces around 400,000 A4 equivalent impressions per month, which is almost twice the volume of any other digital press on the market according to estimates from several industry consultants.
As of the end of 2006, more than 70 iGen3 presses were averaging 1 million pages in a single month, and about 180 customers have multiple Xerox iGen3 presses. The highest print volume produced in a single month on a single iGen3 press to date is 2.5 million pages.
The iGen3 press has taken the lead in productivity, total cost of ownership, substrate latitude, and maintenance/service. Print providers using Xerox systems are experiencing growth in pages as they offer their customers new services and leverage marketing tools such as Xerox’s ProfitAcceleratorTM Digital Business Resources Collection, the industry’s most comprehensive collection of resources to help customers build their digital printing business.
