A senior Yemen army officer was killed in an attack by a gunman on Monday in the southern port city of Aden, headquarters for the Saudi-backed government of Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, AFP reported.
From the back of a motorcycle, the gunman shot and killed Gen. Abed Rabbo Hussein as he left his home in the Sheikh Othman district of Aden, military sources said.
Hussein was commander of the 15th Infantry Brigade operating in Abyan province west of Aden, where al-Qaeda has recently seized control over several large towns.
President Hadi's govenrment declared Aden as the country's provisional capital last March, after Iran-backed Houthi rebels overran large swathes of territory in Yemen and forced Hadi's government into exile.
