Unidentified gunmen killed a Yemeni intelligence officer outside of his home in Sana'a Thursday, according to AFP sources.
A police official told AFP that the gunmen "opened fire [from their vehicle] at Colonel Abdulrahman al-Shami, killing him as he was leaving his house."
The gunmen fled the scene in central Sana'a before they could be identified or captured by officials.
Al-Shami's murder came two days after 300 al-Qaeda inmates attempted to escape from a high security prison run by intelligence forces in the capital. Yemeni security officials were able to foil the attempt on Wednesday. The inmates largely represent al-Qaeda's Arabian Peninsula arm (AQAP), considered by the US as the most dangerous branch of the terrorist network.
