ALBAWABA - The United States announced the capture of Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro after a large-scale attack on the capital, Caracas.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in an operation that was carried out by elite American special forces, U.S. Delta Force.
Trump said Venezuela's left-wing leader and his wife were held in a military operation carried out in conjunction with U.S. law enforcement.
He added that Maduro will stand on trial in New York on charges of drug and weapons offences.
First footage of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro released
The U.S. has released photos and videos showing Nicolás Maduro tied while wearing a blue sweater, a hat and black pants, while he was surrounded by American guards upon landing in New York, where he will stand on trial.
Some social media activists said that Maduro will likely be sent to the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
In one of the newly released footage, Maduro was spotted being taken out of the car escorted by DEA agents inside the headquarters of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in lower Manhattan.
Trump said on Jan. 3 that Washington will "run" Venezuela and tap its huge oil reserves after capturing Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, during a bombing raid on the capital.
