ALBAWABA - Outrage after a video went viral showing a student at Tufts University being arrested by the US Homeland Security agents without explanation, the Turkish woman's lawyer announced on Wednesday.
Rumeysa Ozturk left her house in Somerville, Massachusetts before being stopped by the masked agents and detained on Tuesday, lawyer Mahsa Khanbabai revealed in a petition to Boston federal court.
The US Homeland Security men were spotted on camera forcibly taking the phone of the PhD Turkish student while she was yelling and being handcuffed at about 5:30 p.m.
Her lawyer said that Tufts University was heading to meet her friends to break her fast as she is fasting Ramadan, but she was taken by agents before.
“We are unaware of her whereabouts and have not been able to contact her. No charges have been filed against Rumeysa to date that we are aware of,” AFP cited Khanbabai's statement.
Democratic US Republican Ayanna Pressley decried the student's arrest and called for her immediate release. She said: "We won’t stand by while the Trump Administration continues to abduct students with legal status and attack our fundamental freedoms."
