ALBAWABA - A viral video of a young child purportedly being urged to drink alcohol has prompted considerable indignation in Morocco, with calls for responsibility and a speedy reaction from law enforcement officials.

The video, which went viral on social media, was heavily criticized by activists, child rights advocates and the general public, who called it a grave violation of the child’s welfare and dignity. Many called for a quick inquiry and for legal action to be taken against those responsible.

Public indignation rapidly spilled over on social media, with rights groups warning of the possible physical and psychological harm done to a child by exposing them to such behaviour. Various organizations called on the authorities to intervene and provide safety for the child.

Some of the more vocal responses came from advocates for child protection who denounced the occurrence and called on prosecutors to take a hard line. Human rights experts also expressed worry, stressing that children must be protected from exploitation, neglect and dangerous behaviour that could impact their development and well-being.

As the criticism built, a relative seen in the video attempted to diffuse the controversy by stating the child was sipping a soft drink and not alcohol. But the answer did not satisfy many observers and did little to ease public outrage.

Authorities later proceeded with arrests.  Local sources said detectives examined the video and other evidence before arresting three brothers on suspicion of involvement.

The suspects are now the subject of a court inquiry to ascertain all the facts of the case and possible criminal responsibility. The investigation is being carried out under the direction of the public prosecutor’s office.

The event has rekindled debate in Morocco concerning the protection of children, internet content and the duties of adults who distribute potentially damaging material involving minors on social media. It has also raised calls for tougher enforcement of laws meant to protect minors from abuse and exploitation.
