Families, Civilians Make Mass Exodus Out of Ukraine

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNCHR) has estimated that 1 million refugees have fled Ukraine just one week after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of the country. Families, foreign nationals and civilians alike in Ukraine have sought salvation in neighboring Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Moldova. And while these countries have eased entry restrictions on refugees coming from Ukraine, the sheer number of people making the journey has overwhelmed border crossings. The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv reported on Feb. 27 that the wait times at all of Poland's border crossings were well over 24 hours. Some refugees fleeing Ukraine have had to walk over 10 hours along their journey, sleep along roads in freezing temperatures and pay hundreds of dollars for transportation out of the country.
