According to Algerian customs officials, Algeria has exported nearly 31 billion dollars in 2004. The statement was made by the director general of the Algerian customs, Sid Ali Lebib and quoted in the Algerian press. Non hydrocarbon exports only made up 769 million dollars, which is considered a disappointing figure.
Imports in the same period reached 17.75 billion dollar. There seems to be some discrepancies in figures presented by Algerian energy minister, Chakib Khelil who indicated the oil income alone would exceed 31 billion dollars.
