Members of the Arab League met in Syria October 12, 2003, to discuss the regional economic embargo on Israel. Participating states are expected to add new companies to the list of firms banned for dealing with the Jewish state.
The eighteen members attending the five-day conference are also expected to review the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and consider lifting sanctions against companies who have stopped dealing with Israel, reported AP.
The executive office for the Arab boycott of Israel (OBI) met in October 2001 for the first time since 1993 to reactivate an embargo in response to the Jewish state's attacks on the Palestinians.
“When Israel does not respect accords signed (with the Palestinians), it is necessary to reactivate the boycott as an instrument of legitimate pressure," Arab League deputy secretary general Said Kamal said at the opening session two years ago.
Arab League members Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania and Comoros are not attending this year's meeting. — (menareport.com)
