The first Iraqi passenger plane landed in Tehran on Sunday for the first time since 1980, an Iranian aviation official has confirmed.
Spokesman for Iran's Civil Aviation Authority, Noor Allah Redha'e, said that Iraqi Airways plans to fly scheduled flights to Iran on Wednesdays and Fridays from November 15, 2005. Sunday's flight carried journalists and politicians, Reuters reported.
As to Iran Air, it is still concerned about insecure Iraqi skies, Noor Allah noted, adding that if the Iraqi authorities provide security guarantees, flights will be resumed to Baghdad soon.
National carrier Iraqi Airways resumed international commercial flights last year after 14 year halt, flying between Amman, Baghdad and Damascus, although with few passengers on board.
