Huawei awarded Algeria GSM-R contract

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd (Huawei), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, has announced that Algeria Société Nationale des Transports Ferroviaires (SNTF) has selected Huawei’s GSM-R solution for the construction of the Tabia-Mecheria railway communication system.
Tabia-Mecheria line is an important main passenger transport stem in Algeria with 220 kilometres of rail tracks. Under the contract, Huawei will provide GSM-R network design and engineering services to SNTF.
Huawei’s GSM-R solution can meet ETCS LEVEL-2 requirements and possesses the capability to support ETCS LEVEL-3. After construction is completed, Tabia-Mecheria line will be the first modern railway in Algeria to be equipped with GSM-R technologies.
“Huawei has invested continuously for ten years in GSM-R technology, and we are delighted to construct the GSM-R system for SNTF. Huawei will make a positive contribution to the rail communications industry in Algeria through the supply of abundant rail communication services,” said Tian Feng, President, Huawei Technologies Middle East and North Africa.
Since 1996 Huawei has been investing in the research and development of GSM-R technologies and was awarded the first commercial GSM-R contract in China by Daqin railway in 2003. While Huawei was the first to introduce GPRS technologies to railway application, it has also introduced highly reliable, next generation core network and ALL-IP platforms to GSM-R.
