Israel to buy 50 Lockheed Martin F16 fighter jets
Israel has signed a contract with Lockheed Martin of the United States to buy 50 F16 combat planes, the defense ministry said Tuesday, June 19. The new aircraft are to be delivered between 2006 and 2009 and are in addition to 50 ordered in 1999.
The deal was signed at the Le Bourget-Paris Air Show, just outside the French capital.
Earlier Tuesday, the company said an agreement in principle had been signed for purchase of the aircraft. It said the total value of the deal was around two billion dollars, of which Lockheed Martin's part is $1.3 billion.
The aircraft will include components provided by Israeli companies and will be powered by Pratt and Whitney engines. ― (AFP, Beirut)
