More than 500,000 work places have been created in Algeria during 2004, said the Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, at the opening of the 25th National Economic Council Meeting, according to Algerian press sources.

The minister claimed that this result was realized through an expected 5.8% growth rate in the economy during 2004, after the 6.8% growth in 2003. The minister believes that these statistics are an endorsement of the government's economic policy and commitment to create prosperity and jobs.

Unemployment remains high however, around the 60% mark and is especially high among youth.
