As additional shopping malls are being set up in Dubai, the established retail outlets will have to reposition themselves in the market, a mall executive told Gulf News.

General manager Andrew Chambers of the Gardens Shopping Mall, which is set to open next month, was quoted as saying "While it may seem there are too many malls on-stream, demand will absorb most of the new outlets."

Studies indicate the growth in population in Jebel Ali would be able to sustain the proliferation of shopping malls, he noted. Chambers said in just three years there will be about 200,000 residents within five minutes of the Gardens.

He spoke of such developments as Dubai Marina and the Discovery Gardens. The 3,000 furnished studio apartments, which will be completed by the end of the year, have already been fully leased, he said.
