Motorola and Qatar Telecommunications (Qtel), have deployed a multi-million dollar indoor telecommunications network for a number of stadium venues in Doha, including Khalifa Sports City.  The new network was rolled out successfully in time for the 2005 West Asian Games, which concluded last week, and will also be utilized during  the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.

“As Qatar gears up for the global spotlight as the host of the 2006 Asian Games, Qtel recognizes that its communications services must be up to an international standard,” said Ali Amer, director of sales for Motorola Networks in the Middle East, North and French Africa region. “Qtel will now benefit from additional revenue generating opportunities, not only from an increased coverage area, but also from advanced mobile data applications.”

The agreement between the two companies includes 2G (GSM) and 2.5G (GPRS) network infrastructure as well as engineering services and is part of the three-year frame agreement signed last year. Part of the for the Asian Games deployment revenue was recognized in Q3 2005.

“With the world-class technologies that we have on offer, we are working towards bringing in a whole new dimension to watching the Games in Doha, “ said  Fahad Bin Jassim Al Thani, Executive Director of Qtel’s Wireless Services. “We are pleased to be partnering with Motorola to provide us with the solutions to ensure that the surge in phone calls during the Games can be easily handled by the Qtel network.”

Motorola has been the leading GSM network provider to Qtel for more than 11 years. Under the current three-year frame agreement signed in 2004, Motorola has the capability to supply Qtel with a range of solutions, including 2G (GSM); 2.5G (GPRS) and Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution (EDGE). In addition, Motorola is providing a suite of network integration and support services including network planning, project management, deployment and value added network performance.  This will ensure that the Qtel network is designed, planned and optimized to provide enhanced network quality, more capacity and operational efficiencies.
