It rained roses at BurJuman on Friday, October 21, as a 200-kilogram shower of pink rose petals brought the “Women of Substance - Pink Survivor Fashion Show” to a stunning close.
The fashion show, part of Safe & Sound’s ongoing breast cancer awareness drive, saw 12 breast cancer survivors take to the catwalk to share their victory against the disease and act as an inspiration for other women in the community who are battling breast cancer. With early detection being the key to survival, the survivors recognized the event as a perfect platform to spread the message of hope and to highlight the ways in which timely medical treatment and community support can help patients on their paths to recovery.
All of them wore clothes and accessories provided by BurJuman fashion retailers including Al Bandar, Aldo, Basler, Bebe, Charles & Keith, Jeans West, Kenneth Cole, No-lita, Nine West and Rare, and make-up styled by Inglot.
The annual event once again highlighted the importance of ‘regular check-ups and early detection’ as one of the largest contributors to high survival rates among victims of the disease.
“I joined this event to encourage people to become aware of breast cancer, how to recognize it, how to deal with it and to let them know that there is hope. Events like these help take away the fear women have on learning that they are stricken with cancer. As a survivor of 3 years, I want to do for others what has been done for me,” said 54 year-old Remy Alcazar from the Philippines, modeling in the “Women of Substance - Pink Survivor Fashion Show” for the first time.
Another first time participant was 46 year-old Marion Lentle, breast cancer survivor from Germany. “I am proud to have taken part in this year’s survivor fashion show for Safe & Sound as part of their Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign. I am so grateful that Safe & Sound are raising awareness in Dubai and the UAE with all these fantastic events. I have made lots of new friends who have gone through the same challenging experience as me at previous Safe & Sound events and together we love to support these campaigns. It is the first time I have taken part in the “Women of Substance - Pink Survivor Fashion Show” at BurJuman and I am pleased at the immense support given to us by everyone. Dubai is such a fantastic city and I am glad to have been part of such an amazing event,” said Lentle.
