The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) is providing 63 students with an opportunity to gain invaluable experience through its two summer internship programs in the Republic of Korea.
Thirty-six Grade 11 students from the Institute of Applied Technology (IAT) set off last week for the 12-day long ENEC Summer Training Program in the Republic of Korea. Organized together with KHNP Education Institute, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd, and KEPCO Plant Service & Engineering Co., Ltd, the program aims to nurture students’ academic knowledge and experience with practical applications in nanotechnology and nanoscience.
On Sunday, 27 of ENEC’s current scholarship students traveled to the Korean capital Seoul for the start of a 10 day ENEC Scholarship Korean Industry Program, which will give them experience and knowledge of operations at an operating nuclear energy plant as well as opportunities to meet key organizations in the nuclear industry, from operations, safety, research and education.
Both programs will introduce students to some of Korea’s leading science research centers and industrial parks, as well as some of the country’s most advanced nuclear energy plants. Students will also enjoy learning about the rich Korean culture with city tours of Seoul and Busan in their itineraries.
“Our Summer Internship Programs offer great opportunities for talented students to step out of the classroom and put theory into practice. Students are introduced to specialized, technical concepts and get a chance to enhance their skills and knowledge. Initiatives such as these put students on the path to becoming key players in the UAE’s future nuclear energy sector,” said Azzah Al Sharhan, Director of Human Resources at ENEC. “The summer programs are part of our larger Energy Pioneers program, which aims to attract and train our nation’s future leaders of the nuclear industry.”
Azzah Al Sharhan continued: “Developing our human resources and expertise is key to the sustainability of the UAE’s nuclear energy program. All of our programs combine a discipline-focused curriculum with real, hands-on experience from some of the industry’s leading engineering and nuclear energy experts, to ensure our students enter the UAE’s nuclear energy industry with world-class training. ENEC’s overriding commitment to safety, security, and continuous learning makes it a challenging and rewarding career choice for our country’s best students.”
ENEC, the entity responsible for the construction and operation of the UAE’s first nuclear energy plants, expects to require more than 2,000 staff by 2020.
ENEC offers a wide range of scholarship-based training and development programs for UAE nationals, which include undergraduate, postgraduate and vocational courses. Applications are now open for the 2012/13 intake across all of ENEC’s scholarship programs, including the Bachelors and Masters programs, and the Higher Diploma of Advanced Energy Engineering Technology program, which is available through the Abu Dhabi Polytechnic.
