Saudi Arabia will grant the Sudanese government $150 million to build a dam across the Nile River in Northern part of the country. The Merwe Hydro Dam Project is forecasted to produce 1,250 megawatts of electricity.
The 60-meter-high dam will also serve as a means of redirecting water for irrigation in the region. Heavy rainfall last year in Ethiopia caused the Nile to reach its highest level in over 20 years, which consequently lead to flooding in some parts of Sudan.
Financing for the project has also been provided by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, the Kuwaiti Fund for Economic Development, the Saudi Fund for Economic Development and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. — (menareport.com)
