World Bank approves US$ 65 million loan to Yemen
The World Bank has recently approved a US$ 65 million loan to Yemen to help increase access to basic education for all, especially girls and disadvantaged groups, enhance the quality of education and improve management and efficiency of the education sector.
Enrolment in primary education has increased from 25,000 students in 1970 to more than 4 million in 2003. However, significant lack in access, quality and efficiency exist; enrolment is about 65 percent, and the adult literacy rate is only 48 percent. Gender equality is an especially severe problem, with only 55 percent of primary school-aged girls in schools country-wide and less than 30 percent in rural areas. (menareport.com)
