A prison meat supplier in England has been suspended by the Ministry of Justice after pies and pasties for Muslim prisoners, delivered by the supplier, were found to have contained traces of pork, which is non-halal, and forbidden according to the Islamic dietary laws.
According to Jeremy Wright, the Justice Minister, the ministry is taking every step to resolve the situation and that the Prison Service is investigating the situation as a matter of urgency, The Independent reports.
All prisons have been informed but the name and location of the supplier were not revealed. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed the contamination came from pork and an inquiry has begun to see if the contaminated food has been distributed more widely.
Welcoming the Ministry's apology and investigation, Juliet Lyon, director of the Prison Reform Trust, said that it is matter of Islamic law instead of a mere dietary preference, and as such the lapse will have offended the Muslim prisoners and their families.
A FSA spokeswoman said that the agency has called an urgent meeting of the big retailers and suppliers to ensure everyone is fully aware of their responsibilities.
The pies and pasties came from a supplier which had certification that supposedly assured buyers the meat was halal.
