The International Montpelier Film Festival has chosen Egyptian star Omar al Sherif as an honorary head for the its upcoming 24th festival and jury which will be held in France during the period between October 24-November 5, 2002, according to the daily al Ahram.

Sherif agreed to head the forthcoming festival despite his commitments to shooting a new film in Paris, after managing to take a 5-days off during the festival period.

The festival will screen a large number of Sherif’s Egyptian and international films.

However, the French Montpelier Festival takes a special interest in Arabic films because it is concerned with the Mediterranean countries.

Ten years ago, the festival honored the Egyptian actress Faten Hamamah and late director Henry Barakat. The festival also honored the late director Atef al Tayyeb after his death by screening all his films, and hosted the Egyptian actor Noor al Sherif and actress Leblebah, who played the starring roles in the film Lailah Sakhinah (Hot Night), to talk at the festival about the director’s course of his career -- Albawaba.com
