An Egyptian family court will convene on July 22, 2005 to determine a verdict in the case against young Egyptian actor Ahmad Fishawi, who is accused by Egyptian interior designer Hind Hinawi of being the biological father of her newborn daughter.

Ahmad refused to undergo a DNA test to prove if he is the father of Hind’s baby, but has admitted that he had an intimate relationship with Hind.

Ahmad claims he is “not sure” if Hind’s child is his.

Hind’s lawyer filed a lawsuit against Ahmad accusing him of adultery after he had confessed in an official police report. The lawsuit will be added to the many filed against Ahmad by Hind, who waits the court’s verdict.

On the show “Al Bait Baitak” Ahmad admitted that he had an illicit affair with Hind, but stressed that they never married in secrecy.

Ahmad expressed his guilt over the nature of their relationship, and for behaving in a way that is against the teachings of Islam. He has requested the consultation of an Islamic preacher to guide him.

The case against Fishawi has drawn international attention, with the British and American press taking a keen interest in the case, deeming it a representation of the liberal steps taken by Egyptian society.

The London newspaper, The Guardian published an article titled “A New Egypt Waiting to be Born,” considering the candidness of an unmarried, single mother like Hind Al Hinawi in a conservative society like Egypt, and the support she has received from different people, a reflection of the changes Egyptian society is experiencing.
