The Francophonic Film Festival will be opened by screening the Egyptian director Yousef Shahin’s film Sukoot Hansawar (Quiet, We Will Shoot) in the first half of March, 2002 in the Austrian capital Vienna.
The film’s director Yousef Shahin will be the guest of honor of the festival’s fourth session.
“Egypt will participate in the festival with many films in addition to Shahin’s film including some which were produced during the past two years and aroused important controversy between Egyptian critics and cinema fans,” the head of the National Cinema Center critic Ali Shadi told AFP.
Among the participating films are Asrar al Banat (Girls’ Secrets) directed by Magdi Ahmed Ali which aroused a wide social controversy about sexual relations among the adolescents. This is in addition to the issue of girls’ circumcision, which represents the most important issue in the pro woman liberalization movements in Egypt. The film was chosen for the issue it tackles.
Also the joint Egyptian French production film al Abwab al Mughlakah (Closed Doors) by Atef Hatatah will be screened at the festival. The film tackles many issues related to the working class areas; the romantic and sexual relations among people in these areas and among intellectuals; and the impacts of Islamic movements on people in these areas.
