14 Iraqi border guards killed at fake checkpoint
14 Iraqi border policemen were killed after militants set up a fake checkpoint in the west of Iraq on Wednesday, officials reported.
According to AFP, the militants then set fire to the bodies of two of their victims.
The unlawful checkpoint was stationed on the main road connecting Iraq to Saudi Arabia and near the town of Nukhaib, according to AFP.
Major General Yasir Assem, who is a member of the border guards, said that at approximately 11am, the 14 men were travelling to their various stations in unmarked civilian cars.
Gunfire was opened on them after they stopped at a fake checkpoint, Assem told AFP.
The identities of the militants have not been confirmed.
The deaths of the 14 guards comes in the wake of a severely violent year in Iraq.
