Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was in Paris on Sunday for a medical check-up after experiencing problems in his digestive system, his office said in a statement late on Saturday.

According to APS, Bouteflika was initially taken to the military Ain Naadja hospital in Algiers, where he had a "medical assessment" but doctors there told the president he should be flown to Paris for "a more thorough medical check-up".

The statement, however, carried by APS added: "The president's health situation is not a cause of concern." Bouteflika will now not attend the Euro-Mediterranean summit in Barcelona on Sunday as planned.

Bouteflika was born on March 2, 1937 and has been the president of Algeria since 1999.
