The Joint Defense Council meeting scheduled for Thursday at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo has been postponed as requested by the Saudi government on Wednesday, al-Ahram Arabic News website reported.
An official statement issued by the General Secretariat of the Arab League on Wednesday afternoon announced that the Arab league received memos from Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Iraq agreeing to the Saudi request.
The Joint Defense Council meeting was to draft a protocol for an Arab Joint Force.
The General Secretariat added that the meeting was postponed to unspecified date after the secretary general consulted Egypt, the current president of the Arab Summit.
Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi had proposed the formation of a combined Arab force to the Arab summit which took place in March 2015 in Sharm al-Sheikh.
According to the summit's March stipulation, the Joint Arab Force is intended to combat security threats to the Arab region, particularly from "terrorist" organizations.
The Arab countries' heads of state have twice met in Cairo, in April and May, where they drew up a draft protocol for the creation of the Force.
