Asian Football Champions Quarter Finals To Begin
Two matches will kick off the quarter finals of the Asian Football Champions Cup tomorrow in Riyadh at the King Fahd International Stadium.
Al-Sharq Al-Awsat daily reports that the four teams to play will be the Saudi Al-Hilal, the Iranian Birouzy, the Iraqi Al-Shortah (Police) and the Kazakh Airtish Club. The games are organized in the form of a small league, at the end of which the top two teams will qualify for the Asian Champions Cup. The final game will be held in Japan between April 20-22.
Saudi's Romanian coach, Mr. Angel Yordanesko, is seeking to restore Al-Hilal's reputation as one of the best soccer clubs in Asia after its expulsion from the Arabian Gulf Football Championship recently held in Kuwait. The team is the only Asian club who has won all the titles organized by the Asian Football Association. This includes the Asian Football Champions Cup in 1996, the Asian Super Soccer Cup in 1997 and the Asian Clubs Championship Cup in 1991.
The team began preparing for the upcoming game last Tuesday with practice sessions that included all of the team's international star players, such as Yousef Al-Thenian, Khaled Al-Teemawi, Mohammed Al-Da’ia (goalkeeper), Nawaf Al-Temiat, Sami Al-Jaber and the Kuwaiti striker Jasem Al-Huwaidy.
