Barak ‘Strongly’ Believes Israeli-Syrian Agreement Possible
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak expressed confidence Sunday that a peace between Israel and Syria is possible, on positive statements from Syrian President Bashar Assad.
"We have heard some positive signals from young Assad. He made it clear that peace is a strategic choice," said Barak, speaking in New York before his scheduled departure later for Israel.
"I strongly believe an agreement between Syria and Israel is possible," he said, during an address to the United Jewish Appeal.
He added: "And even the failed summit in Geneva will become a major milestone" in the road to peace and reconciliation.
Barak also referred to this week's election results in Lebanon, which saw opposition candidates, led by former prime minister Rafiq Hariri crush the Syrian-backed government candidates.
"Bashar's comments on the elections in Lebanon are in a way encouraging," Barak said – NEW YORK (AFP)
