European Union foreign ministers issued a statement condemning Hamas's firing of rockets and use of civilians as human shields. The statement also condemned Israel's killing of civilians and recognized Israel's right to self-defense.

"Israel is an essential American ally and needs these assets to defend itself," the Maryland Democratic senator said in a statement.
