EQUATE celebrates launching world-class environmental projects
EQUATE Petrochemical Company celebrated the launch of two major environmental Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives during a grand celebration themed "EQUATE Safeguarding Kuwait's Environment" during Sunday, November 28, 2010.
The initiatives are Kuwait's 1st Green Carbon Project for carbon dioxide recovery and the Middle East's 1st Plant Water Recycle Project.
Addressing attendees during the celebration, EQUATE President & CEO Hamad Al-Terkait said, "EQUATE continues to provide its utmost contribution and commitment to ensure the overall sustainability of the State of Kuwait. Our CSR initiatives stretch across various social and economic sectors enabling EQUATE to share its success with the community."
Al-Terkait added, "Over the years, EQUATE has demonstrated its commitment and dedication to making a positive difference in the community as it continues to provide valuable and innovative initiatives across various sectors, such as manpower development, education, community awareness, corporate contributions and the environment."
Al-Terkait noted, "Today, EQUATE celebrates the launch of Kuwait's 1st Green Carbon Project for carbon dioxide recovery and the Middle East's 1st Plant Water Recycle Project. These projects are a continuous embodiment of our commitment and dedication to being a valued neighbor in Kuwait and beyond through forging partnerships with relevant bodies."
On his part, EQUATE Project Execution Group Leader Abdullah Al-Masoud addressed technical details relevant to these projects, highlighting their value to EQUATE, the industrial sector and Kuwait as a whole.
In press statements following the inauguration, Al-Terkait said the Water Recycle Project has the cost of over USD 11 million while the Green Carbon Project is valued at over USD 65 million.
Al-Terkait noted that EQUATE's 2010 performance has so far exceeded plans by over 30%, expecting 2011 to carry further success and growth.
Prior to the celebration, EQUATE hosted a press conference which included the participation of VP Technical Services Mohammad Al Benali who outlined EQUATE's overall CSR efforts, initiatives, strategies, steps and contribution.
Al Benali explained "EQUATE allocates various resources to achieve sustainability in Kuwait. Through EQUATE CSR Program, the company launches various initiatives relevant to critical sectors, such as:-
Education (annual university scholarships in cooperation with MOHE – activities of MOE and Kuwait University); Awareness campaigns in public health and role of plastic in modern life; Supporting human resources and career development; Contributing to academic and scientific bodies; and Preserving and protecting the environment through all possible means."
Al Benali noted that these voluntary projects are an extension of EQUATE's CSR efforts aimed at preserving and protecting Kuwait's environment.
On his part, PD Leader Ahmad Al-Saleh said, "The Green Carbon Project is aimed at Developing and encourage local innovative industrial business opportunities, Supporting the economy by creating added-value for downstream industries in Kuwait, Minimizing EQAUET plant CO2 emissions, as well as Providing greencarbon Company with 450 t/day of CO2 for downstream industries."
In addition, Project Execution Group Leader Abdullah Al-Masoud addressed issues relevant to the Plant Water Recycle Project as a unique initiative to "Recover 80% of EQUATE process water; Reuse the recovered water as makeup for EQUATE water; Reduce the distilled water intake annually by 20% to 32%; Build new irrigation piping network inside EQUATE and make it available to be used by 2012; and Treat 50 m3/h of EQUATE storm water and make it suitable for irrigation."
Al-Masoud added that the project will annually recycle 245 million gallons of water, noting that on daily basis EQUATE will be saving distilled water for the use of over 8000 persons in Kuwait.
The celebration was attended by several dignitaries, such as EQUATE Board Chairman Yousef Al-Ateeqi, Board Deputy Chairman Raja Zeidan, other board members, PIC Board Chairperson & Managing Director Maha Mulla Hussain, greencarbon Board Chairman Fahad Al-BNafisi, Director General of Public Authority for Industry Dr. Ali Al-Mudhaf, Director General of Environment Public Authority Dr. Salah Al-Mudh'hi, as well as several other industrial and official figures.
Established in 1995, EQUATE is an international joint venture between Petrochemical Industries Company (PIC), The Dow Chemical Company (Dow), Boubyan Petrochemical Company (BPC) and Qurain Petrochemical Industries Company (QPIC). Commencing production in 1997, EQUATE is the single operator of a fully integrated world-scale manufacturing facility producing over 5 million tons annually of high-quality petrochemical products which are marketed throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Europe.
