Fatah hold first Gaza rally for years
Fatah has held a rally in the Gaza strip for the first time in years
Friday 4th January, thousands of Palestinians gathered in Gaza City to mark the 48th anniversary of the Fatah movement.
This was the first Fatah rally held in the Strip since Hamas took control in 2007, essentially splitting the Palestinian Authority in two.
Over the past years, Hamas and Fatah attempts to reach reconciliation have failed, however, recently the two ruling Palestinian factions have been trying to mend fences following the PA's successful status upgrade in the United Nations and Hamas triumph over Israel in the latest Israeli escalation on Gaza.
It's worth mentioning that the PA had previously allowed Hamas rally to be held in the West Bank's different governorates. Friday's Fatah rally in Gaza is apparently meant to be a reciprocal gesture and a way to acheive reconciliation.
Palestinian media sources reported that crowds began gathering in Saraya square in Gaza City on Thursday night, where Fatah's supporters were waiving flags and chanting the party's slogans.
