Heavy clashes continued between Yemeni forces and Shiite rebels in the north of the country on Sunday, military officials and witnesses said. Army tanks fired as armoured vehicles blocked the entrances to the allies of the old city in Saada, stronghold of the Shiite rebels, the officials told AFP.
The rebels returned fire on the army from a hideout in a fortress overlooking the old town. Shops were closed and residents stayed indoors. At least 10 people were killed in the fierce confrontations at al-Tut, central market and Thi Sufal areas, including old Saada rebel leader Waddah Saleh Nasser, News Yemen said on Sunday.
On Friday, fighting resumed only four hours after a truce was declared. The Shiites on Sunday blamed the government for its collapse. They said the government had bombarded Amran province with rockets and fired artillery on areas there.
