Iran's powerful Guardian Council on Tuesday said it is prepared to recount disputed ballot boxes. "We are ready to recount those boxes that presidential candidates claim to have been cheated," Abbas-Ali Kadkhodayi, the council's spokesman, said.

This latest development comes as Iran has witnessed protests by pro-reformist voters who reject Friday's election as fraudulent.

Meanwhile, Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani blamed the coiuntry's interior minister for attacks on civilians and students at Tehran University dormitory. "It is beyond reason that students at a Tehran University dormitory or civilians at a residential complex are being attacked in the wee hours. The Interior Minister (Sadeq Mahsouli) is responsible and should be accountable for the events," ILNA quoted Larijani as saying on Tuesday.

Larijani also recommended that all candidates "follow a legal path." According to him, he has assigned a committee to look into what he calls "unfortunate incidents" that took place at a Tehran University dormitory in the aftermath of the disputed presidential election.
