Iraqi President Jalal Talabani's health is "almost back to normal" and he could leave hospital within days, his personal physician Ayad Jar Hishmat told AFP on Thursday. "Today the president's health is in excellent condition. He is almost back to a normal state," Hishmat said from Amman's King Hussein Medical Centre.

Talabani, 74, was flown to neighbouring Jordan late on Sunday suffering from exhaustion and dehydration.

"All the tests he has had so far have shown that his general condition is back to normal," the doctor conveyed.

He expected Talabani to be able to leave hospital "within days, not weeks" after he completes treatment involving "IV (intravenous) fluids and antibiotics".

"This is the simplest sort of treatment a patient receives," he said.

"The president is now in a period of convalescence. He had a walk this morning, he even had a walk yesterday. He has been receiving guests," the doctor said. "Everthing is normal. We are being transparent," he insisted.
