Israeli Soldier Dies Following Shooting in West Bank
One of two Israeli soldiers, shot in the West Bank town of Qalqiliya Friday by a Palestinian policeman, has died of his injuries, reported AFP.
An Israeli military spokesman confirmed that an Israeli had died after being shot but did not give his identity, said the agency, adding that the shooting incident had earlier been reported by Palestinian and Israeli sources.
Israel Radio said the Palestinian policeman was a member of a special unit with Israeli soldiers who jointly patrol West Bank and Gaza Strip areas that are under Israeli security responsibility and Palestinian civilian rule, according to Reuters.
An Israeli security source said the army was checking reports that shots were fired at Israeli soldiers who had taken a break after conducting a joint patrol with Palestinian police near the town, said Reuters.
An Israeli soldier died on Thursday of wounds sustained when a roadside bomb exploded as a convoy of Israeli cars drove along road in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday night.
Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak urged Palestinian leaders to "grapple far more purposefully with terrorism" after the Gaza attack.
But he vowed to continue efforts to secure a peace deal to end 52 years of conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, added Reuters.
A bomb attack on Thursday night in the same area, near the Netzarim Jewish settlement in Gaza, caused no injuries.
At least 25 Israeli police and at least six Palestinian protesters were wounded on Thursday in the worst clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian protesters for several months, said Reuters.
