Some 50 aides returning with him from exile rolled down the ladder behind the general and his wife. Among them were Gen. Issam Abou Jamra and Gen. Edgard Maalouf who served as cabinet ministers in the interim government he headed from 1988 to 1990.

Earlier, one of the prominent leaders of Lebanon's opposition, Druze chief Walid Jumblatt, called President Emile Lahoud to step down ahead of legislative elections due to begin at the end of this month.

Jumblatt was speaking to the press following a session of parliament during which the only order of business was to read a letter from Lahoud to Speaker Nabih Berri urging adoption of an electoral law "acceptable to all."
