Egypt's president made a rare visit to northern and southern Sudan Monday to discuss the crisis in Darfur and encourage the nation to remain united. President Hosni Mubarak told reporters during his first visit to Sudan's semiautonomous southern enclave that he is there to strengthen bilateral relations and endorse unity between once-warring halves of the country which signed a peace deal in 2005

"We talked about the issue of Darfur for a long time," Mubarak told reporters in the presidential guest house in Khartoum.

According to the AP, Sudan's Foreign Minister Deng Alor said after the meeting, Mubarak discussed Egypt's meetings with Darfur rebel groups to help prepare the ground for negotiations between the two sides.

While in the southern capital of Juba, Mubarak announced that an Egyptian university would open a branch there, Sudan's News agency reported.
