Organ Transplants Becoming Routine in Tunisia
Doctors from the La Marsa University Hospital are hopeful about the chances for the patient upon whom they performed the country's third liver transplant.
This was the third such operation in three weeks. Tunisia Online reported that the latest operation was performed three weeks ago by a 50 person surgical team on a 27- year-old female patient.
Organ transplants are becoming routine in Tunisia after 13 heart and 33 kidney transplants were performed since 1986. More than 900 eye cornea transplants were done in the last 4 years. Tunisia also has a new organ donor program, in which President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali is registered as a donor member.
