The Kuwaiti news agency KUNA reported that Hidaya Sultan Al Salem, the Kuwaiti editor-in-chief of Majalis magazine, was killed on Tuesday when an anonymous attacker shot six bullets into her head.

Al Salem died in hospital, a security source told the agency.

Al Jazeera satellite channel linked the assassination to reports that she published an exposé of the embezzlement of public money and the misuse of office in the Gulf emirate. The station correspondent in Kuwait, however, quoted in his reports sources as saying the motive for the murder was more probably of a personal nature.

Al Jazeera reminded viewers of other assassination attempts targeting journalists who published stories about corruption in the country. It said that 80 percent of Sultan’s recent stories focused on this issue – Albawaba.com
