A suicide car bomb in the western Iraqi city of Ramadi has killed six people and wounded 17 others, police and medical sources said. The bomb, which left two traffic policemen dead, targeted a police checkpoint. Women and children were also among those wounded, police said.

The attack comes two weeks after US troops withdrew from Iraqi cities and towns. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has linked recent violence as an attempt to “undermine confidence in Iraq's own security forces.”

Ramadi, 100 km west of Baghdad, is the main city the western province of Anbar, a former Sunni stronghold that has been relatively quiet in the past 18 months.
