A Syrian delegation is in Saudi Arabia to invite the Kingdom to an Arab summit in Damascus at the end of the month, the Syrian ambassador Ahmed Nizamuddine said on Sunday. According to the Syrian Ambassador, the delegation will deliver President Bashar Assad's invitation to King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz. The delegation was also to deliver the invitation to Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal, the Syrian diplomat said, according to AFP.
Syria has been slow to invite Saudi Arabia to the March 29-30 summit amid strained ties over the deep political crisis in Lebanon.
In the meantime, the Foreign Ministers of Iran, Oman, Qatar and Syria held an unannounced meeting in Damascus. According to Reuters, Syrian sources said that the four ministers held their meeting at a restaurant close to the Damascus International Airport and that the Iranian and Qatari FMs left soon after the meeting ended. The Kuwaiti News Agency quoted an Arab diplomatic source as saying that the quartet meeting focused on developments in Lebanon including Tuesday's session to elect a president of the republic, the situation in occupied Palestine and the upcoming Arab summit in Damascus.
