United States Grants $43.8m to Assist Water Sector in Jordan
The US and Jordan signed on Sunday a grant agreement providing $43.8 million in economic and development assistance for the water sector in the kingdom, according to press release by the US embassy in Amman. This is the second obligation of an overall $150 million economic assistance for 2001.
The US Ambassador, William J. Burns, and Christiansen-Wagner, Mission Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Jordan, singed on behalf of the United States of America, while Jawad Hadid, Minister of Planning, signed on behalf of his country.
Under this grant agreement, said the embassy, the US will provide about $43.8 million to develop and implement urgently needed water projects. This funding is part of on-going USAID initiatives to improve water resource management in Jordan, which now totals $351 million. These projects, under the auspices of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation on and the Water Authority of Jordan, will help finance the design and construction of infrastructure to improve water supply and distribution systems – Albawaba.com
