Nawal Al Moutawakel, the pathbreaking Olympic gold medallist, will lead an array of sportspersons from the Arab world at next week’s Peace and Sport Forum, to be held at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai on April 23-24.

Al Moutawakel, now one of the Vice Presidents in the International Olympic Committee (IOC), will be part of the first workshop entitled “Leading the Way: Get to see the leaders” vision for global peace,’ to be held at 10.30am on the opening day of the two-day event.

Al Omari Farouq Al Omari, Egypt’s Minister of Sport and Shaikh Fahim Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, former Secretary-General of the Co-Operation Council for Arab Gulf States will be the other two speakers at the session that will be moderated by Dr. Abdul Rahim Al Rayes. The same panel will be involved in a separate session to raise proposals in their sphere of expertise later in the afternoon.

The second session of the day has been entitled “Everyone on the field: Stakeholders’ role in coherence and communication between all partners involved” will see an influential set of speakers including Mohammad Al Shaali, UAE’s former representative at the UN and UAE Ambassador in Washington, Manuel Hassassian, Palestinian Ambassador to the UK, Saudi Arabia’s women’s rights activist and economics expert Reem Assad and Dr. Saif Al Hajari, member of the Qatar Foundation that sponsors Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

The session will be co-ordinated by Kevin Roberts from Sport Business.

Al Moutawakel, who turns 51 on Monday, walked into athletics folklore after she became the first Arab female athlete to win an Olympic gold as she took the top position in the 400m hurdles in the 1984 Los Angeles Games. She was later named Morocco’s Minister of Sports.

There will be another two sessions on the first day. The first one will involve Palestine women’s football team captain Honey Thaljieh, Steve Messler, Executive Director, Classroom Champions and Mahash Al Hameli, President, International Centre for the fight against violent extremism speaking on “Understanding the Challenge: Initiatives and Programmes to consolidate the values of peace and sport”.

The day will conclude with a special session starting at 5pm headed by Pakistan football team captain Kashif Siddiqui, Stuart Borrie from the Badminton World Federation and John Long from the International Cricket Council.

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of DSC will formally open the event at 6.30pm. Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Affairs, Joel Bouzou, President and Founder of Peace and Sport Forum and Prince Nawaf Bin Faisal Al Saud, President, Arab Olympic Committee have confirmed their presence for the opening ceremony. The day will end with the award ceremony for Champions of Peace.
