The degree celebrates the Brazilian's significant contribution to humanitarian and environmental causes, as well as his sporting achievements, which include being part of a team that has won the FIFA World Cup thrice.
"I thank not only my family, but all my friends, my players, because you cannot do things alone. I have a lot of people who helped me to be here," the Daily Star quoted Pele, as saying.
The former 'Athlete of the Century' said he hoped to see Brazil win the Olympic football final against Mexico on Saturday.
"People say, Brazil doesn't have a gold medal in Olympics (soccer). I say, yes, I started to play at 17-years-old in the World Cup, and I became a professional, and at that time, professionals could not play," Pele said.
