ACT launches Ahl Al Khair Campaign

Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), the Kingdom's primary gateway to the shipping lines of the Red Sea and beyond, recently launched the Ahl Al Khair (People of Charity) initiative, marking the arrival of the Holy Month of Ramadan. The campaign will comprise of the delivery of staple food packages to underprivileged families throughout the holy month, targeting several areas in Aqaba and its surrounding villages.
This step comes as part of the company's continued commitment to the local community and follows a smaller preparation campaign that was launched last month to gather monetary donations from ACT employees and staff necessary for the organizing of the full charity program. ACT's management proceeded to double the total amount of donations garnered from employees in an endeavor to bring greater benefits to the community. The management then delegated the Social Directorate at the terminal to secure food packages to be distributed to designated areas chosen in partnership with the terminal's employees, with geographical variety being the top priority. The employees also participated in the packaging and coordination of the distributed merchandise.
ACT's CEO Mr. Soren Hansen expressed his great joy at the culture of charity and cooperation that prevails throughout the terminal, explaining that Ramadan serves as an ideal time to reflect this spirit and place it in a practical context.
"We are committed to join our community in its various sacred and social occasions, sharing not only their celebrations but their trials and tribulations," commented Hansen. "We therefore found it prudent to organize an initiative that reflects the values emphasized by the Holy Month of Ramadan."
The People of Charity initiative will unfold in three stages. The first two stages — to be completed by Eid El Fitr — will each entail the distribution of 250 food packages in Aqaba and its key surrounding villages, including Rahma, Qatar, Qureiqera and Tweiseh. The third stage of the campaign will take place during Eid Al Adha.
Earlier this year, ACT had organized an internal "greening" campaign in celebration of Earth Day. The terminal also held a free medical day in Rahma and Qatar, through which the terminal provided free medical tests, consultations and medicine packages to the residents of both villages.
Background Information
Aqaba Container Terminal
In 2003, the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC), on behalf of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, was on a mission to acquire a strategic partnership to improve the efficiency, capacity and the operational performance of the container terminal in Aqaba. After signing a Terminal Management Contract with ADC in 2004, APM Terminals (part of the global A.P. Møller–Maersk Group), took over the management and operation of the terminal.
A 25-year Joint Development Agreement (JDA) was signed between ADC and the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) in 2006. Under the contract, APM Terminals Jordan operates, manages and markets ACT in addition to executing the Master Plan, which anticipates achieving a drastic increase of throughput capacity through a combination of physical and operational improvements.
