اعلن القائمون على مسرحية اعدها ونفذها وقام عليها بالكامل لاجؤون سوريون في لبنان عدم تمكنهم من عرضها في مهرجان ادنبره الدولي للمسرح وقال بيان صادر عن ادارة المسرحية "يؤسفنا أن نعلن أن مسرحية "الفيل يا ملك الزمان.." لن تقدم في برنامج الفنون العربية في مهرجان إدنبرة الدولي للمسرح، وهو أكبر حدث مسرحي في العالم. المسرحية من اخراج كريستال خضر، وتؤديها فرقة العمل للأمل المسرحية، التي قامت مؤسسة العمل للأمل بتكوينها ضمن برامجها التي تسعى إلى تشجيع الإبداع الفني في الظروف الصعبة".
تقول بسمة الحسيني مديرة العمل للأمل "إن دعوة الفرقة لتقدم عرضها ضمن مهرجان إدنبرة الشهير تعد اعترافاً بجهد أعضائها ومواهبهم، وهم مجموعة من الشباب والفتيات من اللاجئين السوريين، تتراوح أعمارهم بين 14 و25 عاماً، تلقوا تدريباً على العمل في المسرح لمدة تزيد عن عامين، وتدربوا لعدة شهور على هذه المسرحية، المستمدة من النص الذي كتبه سعد الله ونّوس، الكاتب المسرحي الأشهر في سوريا في ستينات القرن الماضي، وتحكي قصة قرية يدمرها فيل الملك الأثير".
قامت العمل للأمل فور تلقيها الدعوة في شهر مارس بمساعدة أعضاء الفرقة الذين فرّوا من الحرب في سوريا إلى لبنان ويعيشون فيها حالياً كلاجئين، على الحصول على تصاريح الإقامة القانونية، وعلى جوازات السفر، وكذلك على التقدم للحصول على فيزا المملكة المتحدة. ومن المؤسف أن يأتي يوم 7 آب/أغسطس وهو اليوم الذي كان مفروضاً أن تسافر فيه الفرقة إلى إدنبرة، ومعظم طلبات الإقامة لا تزال معلقة دون رد، كذلك رفضت سفارة المملكة المتحدة طلب الفيزا الخاص بعضوين في الفرقة ولا تزال باقي الطلبات دون رد. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، ليس واضحاً أنه في حالة الحصول على الإقامات والفيزات، سيتمكن أعضاء الفرقة من دخول لبنان ثانية والعودة إلى أسرهم.
وتضيف الحسيني: "من المحزن أن تقف الإجراءات البيروقراطية والأمنية عقبة في طريق تقديم عمل فني لمجموعة من الشباب السوريين الموهوبين الذين علقوا آمالهم على أن يشاركوا جمهوراً دولياً واسعاً في ثمرة جهودهم، وأن يساهموا في تقديم صورة أكثر ايجابية وتفاؤلاً لسوريا، تعكس الغنى الثقافي والفني الذي تتمتع به".

The Elephant Cannot Travel to Edinburgh
"The Elephant, Your Majesty", a famous theater play by late Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous will unfortunately not be part of the Arab Arts Focus at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world's largest theatre platform, because the Syrian actors performing it will not be able to travel from Lebanon to the United Kingdom.
The acclaimed play, which has toured Lebanon over the past year, is directed by Chrystelle Khodr and performed by a group of young and talented Syrian men and women who are part of the theater group developed by Action for Hope, an organization working on the promotion of cultural expression during emergencies.
"For our young actors to be invited to perform at the prestigious Edinburgh festival is a big acknowledgement of their talent and hard work," says Basma El Husseiny, Action for Hope's director. "The group of actors aged between 14 and 25 have been training for many months on this text written by Syria's top playwright in the 1960s., with references to citizenship and rights that are very relevant today," she adds.
Since receiving the invitation in March, Action for Hope has struggled at every step of trying to secure legal residency permits, obtain passports, and apply for UK visas for the young members of the theater group, who have all fled the conflict in Syria and have been living in Lebanon as refugees. However, and until 7 August, the date the group was supposed to travel to Edinburgh, most of the residency permit applications were still pending, for unspecified reasons. Moreover, the UK embassy in Beirut has already denied visas to two members of the group and is yet to reply to pending applications. And even in the case of successfully obtaining legal residency permits and UK visas, Action for Hope has not been able to obtain, from official sources, enough clarity on whether the members of the theater group will effectively be able to return to their families in Lebanon.
"We are truly disheartened by the way that bureaucracy and security measures obstruct the creativity and hope of a group of talented Syrians, says El Husseiny. They have worked extremely hard on their skills and their performance and have been dreaming of showing their Syria to the international audience at Edinburgh: a Syria that is rich in arts, culture and talent."
