Eight inmates of the Gedarif city prison in Eastern Sudan died of diseases caused by unhygienic conditions, the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA) has reported Sunday.

Local authorities were quoted by the official agency as blaming the deaths on “poor sewage piping and disgusting environment inside the prison.”

According to the agency, the tuberculosis and leprosy were epidemic in the prison and that penitentiary authorities had to evacuate an unspecified number of sick inmates to undergo treatment at a hospital in the city.

However, health authorities were called in to vaccinate the remaining 550 inmates against meningitis and spray the cells with pesticides, SUNA said.

Meanwhile, the regional health authorities have contacted the federal government to help improve conditions in the prison – Albawaba.com
